What Does the Bookworm Say?: The Dreaded Reading Slump
Hi and welcome to What Does the Bookworm Say?, a feature where I discuss bookish topics with my friends at The Reader’s Antidote, Books Unbound and The Windy Pages. Each week, we will discuss a new bookish topic. This week’s topic is reading slumps. What do you do when you aren’t feeling the reading love?
We’ve all gone through it before. One day you’re living your lives happily, immersed fictional worlds and wondering what your next book will be when you begin to notice something. That book that you really wanted to read just isn’t doing it for yoo. You stare at the TBR pile and don’t want to read any of them. You may even go to the bookstore and *gasp* come away empty handed. It’s the dreaded reading slump. What’s a reader to do when nothing is appealing?
I don’t go through reading slumps too, thank goodness. When they do, I don’t really try to fight them. I will take a break for a day or two and usually the urge to pick up a book will get to me and I’ll slowly get back into it. I find that reading something “fun” also helps. Everyone has their own idea of what a fun book is but I tend to go for romance or urban fantasy. Books in those genres will usually help me get my mojo back. I will also re-read passages from favorite books if nothing new appeals to me. Comics are also good for a reading slump because they are shorter than a full novel and you get pretty pictures to look at.
Do you have any cures for a reading slump? I don’t think I’ve gone through one for more than a week or two but I’d love to hear your remedies if you have them.
Don’t forget to check out The Reader’s Antidote, Books Unbound and The Windy Pages to see what their answers are to today’s question.
