Outlander Read-a-long: Weeks 1- 3

outlanderreadalong2

Hi, everyone! I know it’s been a little while since my last post. Exciting things were happening in my non book life. I welcomed a new nephew into the world last week! I am excited to have another child to spoil before handing him back to his parents. :)

This post is long overdue. I haven’t been keeping up with this read-a-long very well. It’s not that I don’t like the book, because I do like it, but my progress has been pretty slow. I am going to try to answer the prompt questions as best as I can even though I’m only on Chapter 6.

  • February 8th: Discuss: our initial thoughts of the book
  • February 15th: Discuss: the characters and our thoughts on the characters. Which are our favorites and which ones we don’t like as much.
  • February 22nd: Discuss: compare your initial thoughts with your current thoughts on the book now that we’re 3/4 of the way through

My initial thoughts are that I am really enjoying the book so far. I really like Gabaldon’s writing. It’s detailed without getting bogged down in minutiae and I get a very strong sense of time period and setting. I like that Claire is smart and doesn’t spend a lot of time denying what’s happening or thinking that she’s in a dream. She figures out what is going on pretty quickly is smart about what information she reveals about herself.

I like Jamie though I don’t think I have a great sense of who he is just yet. I know he’s chivalrous and he’s definitely hiding something, but I don’t know what. He and Claire have some chemistry but so far, it’s not very scandalous. Jack Randall is a total ass and I am sure he’ll be showing up again. I liked Frank as well though I am not sure of what to make of his and Claire’s relationship. There’s clearly affection there but is there more?

Unfortunately that’s all I can really say about the book right now. I really need to sit down and read more if it but life’s been crazy lately. I am hoping to get some reading time in this week so that I can catch up before the end of the read-a-long.
