Movies and Shows I’m Looking Forward To – Early 2019 Edition

Good morning! Popping in today with a quick post about some of the movies and shows that I am looking forward to. I feel like a bunch of trailers have been released in the last month and, even though I am the slowest TV watcher ever, there were a bunch of things that looked really cool and exciting. Let’s check them out below!

The Umbrella Academy (February 15)
The Umbrella Academy is a new Netflix series based on the comic book by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Bá. I am kind of ashamed to admit that I haven’t read any of the comics yet. It’s been on my radar for years but I’ve just never gotten around to it. I love a good boarding school/rag tag team type premise (with superpowers!) and this looks really fun. Also, did anyone notice that one of the characters looks to be KNITTING in the show? (see image below)

Clearly, I must know more. The Umbrella Academy will be available on Netflix on February 15.

Deadly Class (January 16)
Deadly Class is yet another comic book inspired series. This one also involves teenagers but they’re training to be the next generation of top assassins. The series is set in the 80’s (yay 80’s) and is produced by The Russo Brothers (recently of Marvel: Infinity War fame). The first few episodes have already been released on SyFy and I am hoping to watch them soon.

I Am The Night (January 28)
Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine re-team for a dark and gritty noir thriller series based a true story. I don’t know a lot about this series except for a few trailers I’ve seen. I know it ties into the Black Dahlia murder which there are many theories about but still remains unsolved. It looks dark and gritty and totally creepy, which is right up my alley. The first episode of this just came out so I hope to get to it soon.

Alita: Battle Angel (February 6)
Alita is based on the popular manga series “Gunnm” by Yukito Kishiro. I haven’t read the manga and so don’t have a lot of preconceived notions on what this is going to be like. The trailer looks really cool and the special effects look pretty awesome. And I am always down for a kickass female driven story.

Isn’t It Romantic (February 13)
This looks like such a cute movie that pokes a little fun at the rom-com genre (and I love a good rom-com). Rebel Wilson is usually pretty hilarious and this just looks like fun. I would totally go see this on Valentine’s Day.

Hellboy (April 12)
I have mixed feelings about this one. I loved the first two films, which were directed by Guillermo del Toro. Due to circumstances, he isn’t directing the new film and the cast is totally different as well. I love Ron Perlman and thought he was the perfect Hellboy. I like David Harbour, too, and don’t want to dismiss the movie before I see it just because it’s not the same as the others. The trailer looks really fun and I think I am just going to try to go into it without a lot of expectations and enjoy it for what it is. Is anyone else looking forward to this one?

Hobbes & Shaw (August 9)
I love a good, ridiculous action film and Hobbs & Shaw ticks all the boxes. The Fast & Furious franchise got a real boost when Johnson and Statham entered the ring. However, as much as I love both of them in the Fast films, I’ve felt like the last couple of movies just had too many characters in them. I was kind of happy to hear that Hobbs & Shaw would be breaking off into their own spin-off series. I think this will allow the Fast films to focus more on the current roster and still add characters without everyone getting only a few minutes of screen time. And I also just want to see Johnson and Statham shine on their own. From the trailer, the stunts look like they’re pretty insane and it looks like it’s going to be funny as well.

Those are a few of the movies and shows I am looking forward to for 2019. Did I miss anything? What are you guys excited about?
