Manicure Monday (83): Beautiful Ruins

Hi and welcome to Manicure Monday, a feature that combines my love of reading and nail polish. Each week I’ll showcase one of my current reads along with a matching book manicure.

Hello, dear readers. I hope that you are all having a fantastic Sunday. We are still having really warm weather here in SoCal so it’s heard to believe that Thanksgiving is coming up in just a couple of weeks. Hopefully the weather will begin to cool down soon though because I want to wear flannel and snuggle up with a book.

So for this week’s manicure, I was inspired by Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. This is another book club selection that I need to finish ASAP. I don’t know why I always put off my book club books until the last minute, but I do. So far, it’s pretty good though and I am hoping to get at least close to finishing before my meet up.

For this manicure, I decided to go for an abstract rendition of the cover. I knew I wasn’t going to draw all of those tiny houses and the best I could do was an approximation of them. To start, I applied 2 coats of a really pretty sea blue-green called Sephora for OPI Mermaid to Order on all of my fingers.

Next I used a bit of a beauty sponge to apply a bright gold (Zoya Kerry) to mimic the skyline. I wanted something more golden but the blue was dark and the glittery gold was the only yellow that would show up over it.

Then I just used acrylic paints in various shades to create the looks of a hillside with houses and greenery. I think the black windows help in making it look more like the cover.

I ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I was going to. It’s pretty abstract but I think you can make the connection when you see them together. Right now I am on page 127 and it’s 8:46pm on Sunday night. Can I finish before Monday night? We shall see…
