Uncovered (132): The Paper Magician

Who says you can’t judge a book by its cover? While it’s not the only factor in picking up a book, a pretty cover doesn’t hurt. Uncovered is a weekly post where I show some cover love. Hope you enjoy!

Hello, hello. I hope you’re all having a great Friday. It’s Halloween! If you can’t tell, I love Halloween. I am going trick or treating with my friend and their kid tonight. We will be three members of Bob’s Burgers and Tinkerbell. I’ll let you guess who’s who. :) Today’s Uncovered book is The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg. I can’t remember where I first saw this now, but it caught my eye when I did. I really like the imagery on this one. I like how the paper plan and the crumpled paper background tie into the themes of the book, which include paper magic and making folded paper creatures come to life. The diagram layout give it a scientific feel as well, making me thing of experiments in magic. Check out the synopsis for The Paper Magician below.

Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic…forever.

Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined—animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.

An Excisioner—a practitioner of dark, flesh magic—invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.

This one looks really fun to me and I will have to look for it the next time I am at the bookstore. What do you guys think? Love or leave it? Let me know in the comments below!
