Stacked (147)

Hello and welcome to Stacked, a weekly (usually) post where I discuss what books I’ve recently bought, borrowed or received.

Hi, guys! I hope you’re all having a fantastic summer. Isn’t it crazy that it’s already August? I have no idea where the summer has gone but I am trying to enjoy it while it’s here. This Stacked post is going to be a little long, as I haven’t posted in a while about my bookish acquisitions. Last month I did a challenge with some friends to read my older ARCs, which did work to an extent, so I haven’t been adding a lot of new books to my queue. That doesn’t mean I haven’t gotten any books though so below are some recent adds to my bookshelves.

Comic-Con, Etc Haul

SDCC2015_Stacked

I meant to post about my Comic-Con book haul a couple of weeks ago but didn’t. I tried to be really selective this year in what books I purchased and/or picked up. I came home with a nice stack of books that I am really excited about.

Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel – This book is told in a reporting style narrative and is about a young girl who stumbles upon an artifact and, seventeen years later, is a physicist leading a team to solve its mystery. Sounds a bit sci-fi and a bit thriller and I am excited to see what it has in store for me.

Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho – This is a debut novel full of magic and adventure. The folks at Ace were really talking this one up and convinced me to give it a try.

Reawakened by Colleen Houck – New fantasy adventure from Colleen Houck that starts with young woman finding an Egyptian prince at The Met museum. From there they go to Egypt to raise his brothers and stop an evil force from taking over the world. Sounds pretty epic and I enjoy Egyptian history.

The Conjurer’s Riddle by Andrea Cremer – The much anticipated sequel to The Inventor’s Secret. I actually haven’t read the first book in the series yet but plan to before the year is done. The series just got a cover change as well. Not sure how I feel about it. The new covers are lovely but I really liked the old cover.

Until Friday Night by Abbi Glines – This is from a friend of mine who attended ALA earlier this year. She knows I like romances and brought this one back for me. Maggie hasn’t spoken since her father murdered her mother. She moves to a new town but still does not speak. West is grieving over his father and ends up talking about his grief to the one person he knows won’t say a word. Sounds like an interesting premise and I haven’t read a good contemporary novel in a while.

Soundless by Richelle Mead –  Another one that my friend picked up for me at ALA. New fantasy series from Richelle Mead. Not sure what to expect from this one but I am excited to read it!

Starflight by Melissa Landers – Start of a new series by Melissa Landers (Alienated, Invaded). Like her previous series, this one is a sci-fi twist on a YA romance. I didn’t read her previous series but heard good things about it and excited to give this one a try.

The Devil’s Engine: Hellraisers by Alexander Gordon Smith – I picked this one up after the publishing rep talked it up. This is the start of a new horror series that takes place during a war.

The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence by Stan Lee, Stuart Moore, Andie Tong –  I had no idea that Stan Lee has written a book until I saw it at SDCC. I think this one is labeled as middle grade and is set around the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie – This fantasy novel has been on my wishlist on I was very happy that I was able to snag at copy at Comic-Con. This is about a prince trying to reclaim his throne.

Hook’s Revenge by Heidi Shulz – This book looks super cute and fun. It’s about Capt Hook’s daughter who goes out on the high seas seeking revenge for her father’s death.

Dead Boy by Laurel Gale – I picked this one up mainly because of the cover. It’s about a boy who died in the 4th grade but is still living an undead life. He makes a friend and, together, they investigate a mysterious monster in the park.

Cold Magic by Kate Elliot (signed) – I haven’t read any Kate Elliot yet but she was signing at the con. We had a nice chat with author Susan Dennard while in line for Kat. I am hoping that this fantasy series will be a good one that I can sink my teeth into.

The Shadow Revolution (signed) by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith – This is a fun urban fantasy series set in Victorian London.

Blood Song by Anthony Ryan – This was described as a dark fantasy series. I don’t know much about it but I received another rec for it over the weekend so I am glad I picked it up. It may take me a while to read it though as I find that fantasy novels require a lot of attention on my part so I need to find a time when I am ready to commit to it.

The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks – This is actually the second book in this fantasy series. The book is the basis for a new TV series from MTV series. I have never read any Terry Brooks before but the pub rep said that this book was pretty accessible.

Heartless and Timeless by Gail Carriger – The last two books in the Parasol Protectorate series. I already own both of these in e-book form but wanted to have physical copies as well. I haven’t read these two yet but hope to finish the series by the end of the year.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch – I was recently in San Diego at Mysterious Galaxy and a lovely gentleman at the store recommended this series to me. It’s an urban fantasy set in London that follows a constable who can speak to the dead. Looks fun.

MagicShifts-IlonaAndrews

Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews – Ahhhhhhh! So excited that this finally came out! It released last week but I held off starting it until yesterday. I really want to try to read this one slowly so that it’s not over so quickly. If you like urban fantasy, you must read this series.

I think that’s most of the books I’ve gotten recently. I am sure that there are some library books missing but this is most of it. How has your summer reading been going? July was pretty good for me but August has been a bit slow. Trying to get as much reading done this summer while I am relatively not busy. Hope you’re all having a great summer!
