Manicure Monday (91): Velvet
Hi and welcome to Manicure Monday, a feature that combines my love of reading and nail polish. Each week I’ll showcase one of my current reads along with a matching book manicure.
Happy Monday, everyone. Hope everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend. I forgot to mention that the blog and the Manicure Monday feature specifically, was featured in a recent online article by Mindhut. There’s a brief interview interspersed with a slideshow of some of my manicures. You can check it out here. Thanks, Mindhut!
Today’s manicure was inspired by Velvet by Temple West. This is my first book from the Swoon Reads imprint and I am loving it so far! It’s a YA novel about vampires. I haven’t read a good teen vampire story in a while and so far, this book is really funny and I am having a really good time with it. As you can see, I am am reading an ARC today so I did not have the full size cover to work with. The burgundy border caught my eye though and I decided to incorporate that along with the title into today’s manicure.
This manicure was really easy and only required a couple of this. The first was a nail polish that matched the cover. I went with Zoya Pepper, a dark red-brown creme. The second thing you need is flocking powder. Flocking powder is a strange, fluffy powder that you use in crafting. I am not actually sure what people use it for but I think it may be similar to embossing powder, but with a fuzzier texture. Unfortunately flocking powder is kind of hard to find these days in an actual store, so I had to order mine online.
After letting one coat of my polish dry, I went back in with a second coat and, while it was still wet, sprinkled a bunch of flocking powder onto my nail. Don’t worry about getting the powder everyone (because you will). It’s easy to brush it off your nails and get it back into the container. Then gently press the powder onto your nail to help it stick. I then sprinkled more powder onto the nail to get any bald spots. You do this for each nail, one at a time.
I used a nail brush to clean up any wayward powder. Just make sure you do this on a piece of paper or paper towel so that you don’t get flocking powder all over your working surface. Then you just let it dry and voila – super fuzzy nails. Unfortunately this look doesn’t last very long and the fuzziness isn’t quite as pronounced after a few hours, but it’s still a fun look.
While this manicure doesn’t quite look like velvet, it’s still pretty cool and I had a lot of fun creating it. Hope you guys liked today’s look!
