Manicure Monday (74): Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Hi and welcome to Manicure Monday, a feature that combines my love of reading and nail polish. Each well I’ll showcase one of my current reads along with a matching book manicure.
Hello and happy Monday, all. I hope you guys had a fun weekend. I didn’t have a Stacked post up yesterday because, surprise, I didn’t get any books last week. So weird for me but also good. I have so many books at home that need to be read and don’t need any more right now. I just signed up for Bout of Books as well, so look for my progress at the end of the week. This week, I have a manicure inspired by Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple. I’d been interested in this book and my friend just picked it for our next book club, so it was the perfect excuse to finally read it. It also has a great cover that gave me a lot of inspiration for today’s look.
I read this book in ebook format, hence why I am holding up my phone instead of the actual book. Bernadette has a really great, graphic cover that lent itself well to nail art. I wanted to make Bernadette’s face the focal point of the manicure. I painted on two coats of OPI Mimosas for Mr. and Mrs., a sheer beige shade. This was for Bernadette’s skin tone. Next I used American Apparel The Valley (light blue) at the free edge of my nail to create the space around Bernadette’s chin. Then I used acrylic paints to draw in her hair, bandanna, and the rest of her facial features.
For the two nails flanking my middle finger, I did a base of American Apparel The Valley to match the light blue cover. Then I used acrylic paint in pale blue and dark blue to draw in the icebergs that are behind her head on the cover.
Here is a close up of Bernadette’s face. As you can see, it’s not quite right. She looks buck toothed here and her nostrils are way too big but, my canvas was small and I really think it looks OK from a distance.
On my thumb and pinkie I wanted to create a snowy texture to represent Antarctica which is talked about a lot in the book. I started with two coats of Cult Nails Tempest, a bright white. Then I used an unusual glitter polish called Nanococo Snowflake, which contains different kinds of white glitter in a clear base. It’s really hard to tell in these pics but it just created a snowy look on my nails.
I hope you guys liked today’s manicure. Let me know what you think of this look or the book if you’ve read it.
