Base Instincts is a novella set in Ione’s Demonica series. If you haven’t read the series yet, there aren’t any huge spoilers in this one, though I would highly recommend going back and starting at the beginning of the series because it’s awesome. Base Instincts focuses on Raze, a medic at Underworld General, a hospital that caters to all demons, good or bad, in a fair manner. Raze is a Seminus demon (yes, you read that right) and his species must have sex in order to survive. Unfortunately biology has also mandated that Seminus demons must have sex with the opposite sex or face debilitating pain or death. This is bad news for Raze because he isn’t attracted to females. Raze has resigned himself to a life without love and of having sex with a female he doesn’t like very much in order to just survive. I am not usually a big fan of novellas and short stories unless I know the author well and know that they can write a good novella. This collection includes stories by Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews, two of my favorite urban fantasy and paranormal romance authors. Having already read some novellas by both of them before, I knew that they could deliver the goods in a shorter format. I did not know much about the remaining two authors before this but, after reading their stories, consider myself fans of both.
Blood Kin is the second book in The Half-Light City series, a fun urban fantasy/paranormal romance series I picked up on a whim earlier this year. Book two focuses on Guy DuCaine, brother of the sunmage Simon from book 1 and legendary Templar. I really enjoyed this one and found myself finishing it in only a couple of days. Holly and Guy are like oil and vinegar but they work so well together. I love adversarial relationships and sparks fly when Guy and Holly are together.
Yes! New Ilona Andrews book! Burn For Me very similar to the Kate Daniels series with the magical and mundane worlds mixing, a reluctant working class heroine with hidden powers, and an extremely powerful alpha male. The characters and settings are different but the patented Ilona Andrews style is definitely there. While this is classified as paranormal romance, don’t let that scare you away if you’re typically not a fan of romance. While it has more of a romance element to it than the Kate Daniels series, I would still categorize it as closer to urban fantasy with a healthy dose of romance vs the other way around. Andrews is a master of the slow burn so expect a lot of foreplay, both verbal and physical. It reminds me a bit of The Edge series in tone so if you like that series, I think you’ll like this one.
