Review: Ironskin by Tina Connolly

Review: Ironskin by Tina Connolly

Truth be told, I put Ironskin on my to-read list years ago and then promptly forgot about it. It came back onto my radar again recently and I finally took the time to read it, and I am really glad that I did.

Ironskin is set in historical England, in a world where fairies and dwarves exist and in which The Great War between humans and the fae ended just five years previous

Review: Ocean Light by Nalini Singh

Review: Ocean Light by Nalini Singh

Ocean Light is the much anticipated book featuring Bowen Knight, a character who first appeared early on in Singh’s Psy-Changeling series. First an enemy, then an ally, Bo is the leader of the Human Alliance. His abhorrence to psychic interference runs deep, which causes him to have a chip implanted into his brain which blocks psychic powers. Unfortunately the chip isn’t without faults and it begins to degrade, putting Bo’s life in danger

In a Nutshell: A Few Mini Book Reviews

My favorite time of year is upon us and I am really looking forward to fall weather and events. While I hate to lose the daylight hours, fall is my favorite season and I love the cooling crispness in the air. California hasn’t had the

Review: Wild Embrace by Nalini Singh

Review: Wild Embrace by Nalini Singh

Ever since Singh first mentioned the Alaris deep-sea station (I can’t remember when this was), I hoped that she would write a story that gave us a closer look at this unusual setting and its unique occupants. She finally does so in this sweet novella about Stefan, a Psy/TK, and Tazia, a human working on the station. Though Tazia is human, she is a lot like Stefan. Estranged from her family, Tazia lives a very lonely life aboard Alaris. As a Psy and former Arrow, Stefan has learned to keep a tight leash on his emotions. However, when the two end up working together to help rebuild a village, their attraction reaches a breaking point which neither can ignore. … Read more »

Review: Base Instincts by Larissa Ione

Review: Base Instincts by Larissa Ione

Base Instincts is a novella set in Ione’s Demonica series. If you haven’t read the series yet, there aren’t any huge spoilers in this one, though I would highly recommend going back and starting at the beginning of the series because it’s awesome. Base Instincts focuses on Raze, a medic at Underworld General, a hospital that caters to all demons, good or bad, in a fair manner. Raze is a Seminus demon (yes, you read that right) and his species must have sex in order to survive. Unfortunately biology has also mandated that Seminus demons must have sex with the opposite sex or face debilitating pain or death. This is bad news for Raze because he isn’t attracted to females. Raze has resigned himself to a life without love and of having sex with a female he doesn’t like very much in order to just survive. Then he meets Slake, a male who stirs in him feelings he isn’t prepared for and makes him long for impossible things. Read more »

Review: Night Shift Anthology

Review: Night Shift Anthology

I am not usually a big fan of novellas and short stories unless I know the author well and know that they can write a good novella. This collection includes stories by Nalini Singh and Ilona Andrews, two of my favorite urban fantasy and paranormal romance authors. Having already read some novellas by both of them before, I knew that they could deliver the goods in a shorter format. I did not know much about the remaining two authors before this but, after reading their stories, consider myself fans of both.

Review: Blood Kin by M.J. Scott

Review: Blood Kin by M.J. Scott

Blood Kin is the second book in The Half-Light City series, a fun urban fantasy/paranormal romance series I picked up on a whim earlier this year. Book two focuses on Guy DuCaine, brother of the sunmage Simon from book 1 and legendary Templar. I really enjoyed this one and found myself finishing it in only a couple of days. Holly and Guy are like oil and vinegar but they work so well together. I love adversarial relationships and sparks fly when Guy and Holly are together.

Review: Burn For Me by Ilona Andrews

Review: Burn For Me by Ilona Andrews

Yes! New Ilona Andrews book! Burn For Me very similar to the Kate Daniels series with the magical and mundane worlds mixing, a reluctant working class heroine with hidden powers, and an extremely powerful alpha male. The characters and settings are different but the patented Ilona Andrews style is definitely there. While this is classified as paranormal romance, don’t let that scare you away if you’re typically not a fan of romance. While it has more of a romance element to it than the Kate Daniels series, I would still categorize it as closer to urban fantasy with a healthy dose of romance vs the other way around. Andrews is a master of the slow burn so expect a lot of foreplay, both verbal and physical. It reminds me a bit of The Edge series in tone so if you like that series, I think you’ll like this one.
